Becoming a Female Entrepreneur is Not Easy: Why we Fail

As women, we are used to power through life and take care of others before taking care of ourselves.  We are expected to figure it all out, and many times, be it because of societal standards or those of our own, we demand less for ourselves, we accept to draw the short straw, and we are ok with not having it all. So how is it possible for us to succeed as a female entrepreneur?

This is a very sticky situation. If you let it be. There is a reason why they tell you to put your mask on first in case of an airplane emergency before helping others. How can you possibly help others if you are out of oxygen? If this is so true in case of an emergency, why is it not true when we want to quit your job and start our own business?

It is not true and it doesn’t seem to apply to everyday life because we do not let it be true. We tell ourselves a million different reasons why we cannot be a successful female entrepreneur, we find ‘evidence’ in imaginary situations that leads us to believe that our businesses will not make enough money and we are better off supporting those around us, even when we know in our hearts of hearts that what will truly fulfill us will be to claim our independence and stop trudging through life, but stepping up to our power.

So here is what I propose you do today.  Take ten minutes out of your day and reflect on why you are abandoning your dreams of being a female entrepreneur. Is it because you don’t have the time, you don’t have the energy or are you living your dream vicariously through somebody else you are truly supporting (emotionally or financially)? Now think about how you are feeling about it. And think about those reasons again. Do you really have no time? Do you really lack the energy to pursue your dreams? Or are you hiding behind a shield in fear of your own success?

Some time ago, somebody told me a phrase that stuck with me: a lot of people say they want things, but that doesn’t mean they truly want them. So how does that work? Well, just because you say you want something, it doesn’t mean that you want it enough to do the heavy lifting. The way I see it, if you really want something, you will do whatever is within your power to accomplish it. If you resort to reasons why you cannot do it, it’s because you truly didn’t want it. Or you are too afraid to step up the game.

After all is said and done, there is only one person who can turn you into a successful business owner and a successful female entrepreneur : that is you. If your drive and resolve are there, you just need to figure out the right steps. Be unapologetic about your life.
